Also known as: Hungarian Wire-Haired Pointing Dog,
Wirehaired Vizsla
History: Originating from Hungary, the Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizsla was created by cross-breeding the Hungarian Short-Haired Vizsla with the German Wire-Haired Pointer during the 1930's.
Colors and Coats Available: Various shades of russet gold and dark sandy gold. The body coat is wiry, close-lying, dense, 3/4 inch to 1 1/4 inches in length and should not hide the body outline. The coat of the head and ears is shorter giving way to eyebrows and beard that are 1- 1 1/4 in in length.
Fairly short, wiry, dense, laying close to the skin.
Longer hair permitted only on beard.
Average Heights and Weights:
Males:
22 3/4 - 25 1/4 in.
Females:
21 1/4 - 23 3/4 in.
Average weight:
45-65 lbs
Grooming and Special Care Needed: Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizslas of proper coat require little grooming other then occasional brushing. Those who posses a longer coat require hand stripping to be kept in correct condition.
Health Concerns: Hip dysplasia, allergies, eye conditions including juvenile cataracts and PRA, autoimmune diseases, seizures, cardiac issues, and cancer. The parents of the Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizsla puppy should have a minimum of OFA hips and CERF (eye)certificates.
Average Life Span: 11-13 years
Best Suitable Environment: To be kept happy and non-destructive he does require daily exercise that should include running, he is then content to lay at your feet.
Personality/Temperament: The Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizsla is a gentle, demonstrably affectionate, sensitive, versatile, natural hunter endowed with an excellent nose and a well-developed protective instinct. With above average trainability and a sensitive nature this breed does not respond well to heavy handed training or harsh discipline. Often clownish, he can be vocal with a wide range of sounds. His demonstrably affectionate nature can lead to the demanding of attention from his owners making this not a breed for those who do not have the desire and time to spend with him daily. While usually good with children, he is very aware of his surrounding and often notices slight changes other breeds do not, so early socialization is recommended.
